Question by olschoolmom: Have you ever seen or know of a child younger than 15 getting pregnant?
I friend of my works with teens and she was telling me about a 12 (yes 12) year old girl who has a 5 month old child (meaning she was 11 when it happened). She told me also that the father is 23 and the mother of the 12 year old refuses to call because “it has her daughter who was asking fast”. The story is just sad and it is deeper than this but that is just wrong.

Question by Devastated: I am 33 and I can’t get pregnant because “inhibin b” level is below 16 – does anyone know anything about this?
I was pregnant 2 years ago (no assistance in getting pregnant – happened on the first try) but had a m/c at 9 weeks. We started trying to get pregnant again 7 mos. after mc and now a year and half later still no luck. I am 33 years old – very healthy with regular 27-28 day cycles. I have been tracking my basal temp for the last year and I appear to ovulate consistently on day 13-14. We have also been using a fertility monitor for the last 4 mos and each month it clearly shows the two peak days. I went to a fertility specialist last month and she ran blood tests. Everything else was fine but my FSH level was 10.6 – which is slightly above norm – she said 10 is the cutoff for “normal”. She also did a blood test for “inhibin B” which came back below 16 which classifies my ovaries as “post menapausal” and she stated that my ovaries are aging “faster” than i am. As you can imagine my husband and I are devastated, because from the information she gave me with we can’t even do IVF unless we use a donor egg. I have never heard of this and was not able to find any helpful information online. I don’t understand how this can be as I have regular cycles and ovulate regularly AND was pregnant two years ago and have not or don’t have any “menapausal” symptoms. When I asked my doctor she just said it happens and hormones change. She did put me on clomid for my next cycle and will retest to confirm the results. I am completely beside myself – not only shocked – but absolutely devastated that I won’t be able to have children. Does anyone know anything about this or can offer me any information as to why this happens or if there is anything that can help? Thank you so much.

Many doctors will push women with high FSH and/or low inhibin B into using donor eggs. Forgive my bluntness, but F your doctor and any doctor who suggest donor eggs without even trying fertility treatment. I have a high FSH (highest was 14) and many doctors would have turned me away but, thankfully, I have a FSH friendly reproductive endocrinologist (RE) who found the right IVF medication protocol for me. Here is a great site you can navigate through and find a FSH friendly RE http://www.highfshinfo.com/ Your FSH is elevated but not that high! I have read that inhibin B can be treated with prednisone and dexamethasone, in order to induce ovulation. I would ask about that. Know that the inhibin B test is new and not often done and that many people who have been successful with low inhibin B just never knew they had it. I was looking at IVFconnections and found some women who had low inhibin B (one was 10 the other 14), elevated FSH, and both had success. Also, FSH can fluctuate from month to month. Know that many clinics will turn you away not because you can’t get pregnant but because you MAY have a more difficulties or your first cycle many be a bit of trial and error to find a protocol that works for you and this can lower their success rate. They prefer to get the under 30 gals in there who are great responders and turn women like us away who do make not make lots of eggs. They turn women away to keep their success rates high. Can you imagine the many women who only hear they can get pregnant with donor eggs and their RE’s never attempt to try their own eggs? It’s heartbreaking.

Egg quality can improve with certain diet and lifestyle changes and by using a medication protocol that fits you. After making a few diet and lifestyle changes my egg quality greatly improved from poor to “beautiful” and my FSH went from 14 to 8. Quality is the goal here, not quantity.

Have you tried acupuncture? If you haven’t I highly recommend that you start at least 3 months before you seek fertility treatments or IVF. I started acupuncture after 3 failed IVF cycles. I also started taking wheatgrass, royal jelly, and fish oil. Also, I started getting gentle exercise (walking, yoga) daily to increase blood flow. This is so important! Embryos need a hospitable environment. Wheatgrass helps alkalize and exercise helps increase blood flow to the reproductive organs. Ask your RE about taking baby aspirin. There is evidence that taking baby aspirin in conjunction with IVF increases success rates as does acupuncture. Check out the book The Infertility Cure by Randine Lewis and her website “the fertile soul” http://www.thefertilesoul.com/ I got so much from these!

Check out fertilethoughts.com too! It is a great site with lots of supportive, welcoming, knowledgeable women! There is a “High FSH” board and “IVF and High Tech.” Both great! http://www.fertilethoughts.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=4

The good news is that you can get pregnant. I am sure once your RE finds a protocol that works for you that you are sure to have success! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions! I wish you luck!
